Kalanggaman Island, is the crown jewel of Leyte. It is located in the Municipality of Palompon, in the province of Leyte in Visayas Region, Philippines. The island is shaped like a bird, reason why its name is derived from the local word “langgam”, that mean bird. The island is flat and surrounded by white sand with some rocky part. The eastern and western tips are sand bars that blend well with the color of the water. Dwarf coconut trees are scattered in the center. There’s no resort or hotel in the area but camping is welcome.
Kalanggaman Island’s real gem are the colorful marine life resting underneath. The place is declared as marine sanctuary in 2009, an environmental fee is collected for every visitor except for the residents of Palompon. The fees go to the Municipality Office of Palompon for maintenance and protection of the Island. In fact, it is a famous dive spots for divers and if you don’t know how to dive, you can snorkel in the reef drop-off near its shore. The best time to visit this island is during summer season, from March to May.
It’s more fun in the Philippines.
