Christmas it’s almost here. There are lights, Christmas songs and Christmas trees everywhere. It’s time to buy presents for our loved ones and we will also have a few days off to relax, to spend with our families, and to read a few books. With that in mind, here are few books to enjoy during the Christmas holidays or to leave as a present under the Christmas tree.
A book that I absolutely love to read on the days leading up to Christmas is A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens. This is a timeless classic and I love immersing myself in the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the Christmas spirits, and Tiny Tim.
Talking about classic novels, another book I love reading during this period is LITTLE WOMEN by Louisa May Alcott (it’s also a good time to watch the movie based on the book). This is another timeless classic that starts right on Christmas day, with the four March sisters missing their father who is fighting in the Civil War.
If you’d like a more cheerful story, than I highly recommend my all-time favourite Jane Austen. At this time of the year, I like to reread EMMA. This is my second favorite novel by Jane Austen (my favorite is Pride and Prejudice), but I like to read Emma’s adventure as a matchmaker for her friends in front of a fire and, possibly, with a mug of hot chocolate.
If you’d prefer a good crime novel, I have a few titles to suggest. THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW by A. J. Finn is the gripping story of a woman who thinks she saw a murder committed in her neighbour’s house, but she’s having a difficult time having people believe her. The novel is being turned into a movie (they are already filming it!) and you can read my entire review here. ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL by Sarah Vaughan is a mystery novel set in the halls of the English parliament. It is a thought-provoking novel about harassment and abuse and it will keep you glued to the pages (you can find my full review here). Of course, I couldn’t forget to mention my favourite crime novelist Agatha Christie. To remain in the Christmas theme, I recommend HERCULE POIROT’S CHRISTMAS, in which my favourite detective spends his holidays solving, once again, a murder.
If you’d prefer some romance this Christmas, I highly recommend the novels by Sarah Morgan. I started reading this author just a couple of years ago, but she quickly became one of my favourite author. I suggest her last three Christmas novels, MIRACLE ON FIFTH AVENUE and MOONLIGHT OVER MANHATTAN, both set in New York (which is magical at Christmas) and both already published in Italian, and THE CHRISTMAS SISTERS, her latest novel and set in the atmospheric Scottish mountains.
So, this is just a short list of books to read or give this Christmas. If you need more suggestion, you can find a long list of my reviews here, full of suggestions.
Merry Christmas everyone!
