What I loved most about this novel is the exotic atmosphere. Set in Tangier, Morocco, during the 1950s, is a novel about toxic friendship and obsession. Two friends, one, Lucy, outgoing and not afraid of anything. The other, Alice, always submitted to someone else, whether is the aunt who raised her or the husband who moved to a country where she is clearly uncomfortable. So when Lucy knocks on her door with a promise to help her get settled in this country she is clearly afraid of, Alice welcomes her in, but soon she finds out that it comes to a cost.
This novel is full of suspense with two different well-crafted main characters. Lucy is manipulative while Alice is anxious, Lucy is resourceful while Alice is dependent. It was almost painful to watch Alice submitting to Lucy’s wishes, especially as flashbacks inform the reader of their past history and the events that led to their fall out during college.
If you are looking for an addictive and stunning thriller, this is one for you. And if you need more incentive, George Clooney is going to make a movie based on it.
