Pubblicato in Italia con il titolo La sorella preferita. Niente è come sembra nel reality show più seguito d’America e le cinque protagoniste faranno di tutto pur di vincere. Anche uccidere…

If you love Liane Moriarty’s novels and Real Housewives (the reality show), then you are going to love this. In this novel there are no housewives, but five strong women who made a name for themselves on their own (with lies, secrets and deception). They are the protagonist of Coal Diggers, one of the most seen reality shows on TV. But like all reality shows, nothing is true about what happens in front of the cameras.

The story opens in the present time when Kelly, one of the protagonist, is being interviewed about the murder of her sister, Brett, one of the other protagonists of the show. But what happened? We jump back in time and we see the story from Brett and Stephanie’s points of view. For the past three seasons of the show, Brett and Stephanie had been best friends, but then something happened and they are not talking to each other anymore. Then there are the other two participants in the show who repeatedly switch which side they’re on. Everyone in the show has secrets and soon the show takes a dangerous turn.

These novel shows the surprising lengths some people would go to succeed. Some of the things these women did to become famous were quite unbelievable and, although I found all the characters unlikable and selfish, I also found them driven and determined. Despite my antipathy towards the characters, the novel is haunting and twisty and I just loved it and I got to the last page holding my breath until the final last shocking truth came out.
