Julia/Jules Abbott hasn’t talked to her sister Nel in more than a decade, but when she drowns, seemingly in a suicide, she has no choice but to go back to Beckford to take care of her fifteen-year-old niece Lena. Nel is the second woman to drown in Beckford Drowning Pool that year, and the last of a long list of women who died in there over the century. Jules’s return to Beckford brings back memories of an unhappy childhood and of a difficult relationship with her sister and, as she goes down a trip down memory lane, the police investigates what really happened to Nel. In the meantime, Lane is sure that her mother would have never killed herself and left her alone, while Louise is still grieving the death of her teenage daughter Katie, who killed herself right in Drowning Pool a few months earlier.
Detective Inspector Sean Townsend and Erin, the new detective in town, are looking for a connection between Nel and Katie’s death and their investigation leads to the death of Sean’s mother, again by suicide in Drowning Pool, thirty years earlier. Is it true what Nel said, that Drowning Pool is the place where you get rid of troubling women?
I have been on a Paula Hawkins binge to make up for the lost time and catch up with the rest of the world who has read both her novels.
This is another captivating and unforgettable novel from this bestselling author. At the beginning, I was a bit confused by the many characters of the novel, but I soon caught up and I liked how the author really dives into their psychology. They are deeply flawed, but they develop throughout the entire novel.
A suspenseful and original novel about families, love, friendship, and a past that refuses to stay buried, there are many twists and turns to keep you on your toes from the beginning to the end.
