I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and one of my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. So when Curtis Sittenfeld, another author who I love, published Eligible, a modern version of Pride and Prejudice, I couldn’t wait to put my hands on it.
Instead of the English countryside, we have New York, Los, Angeles, and Cincinnati. Elizabeth Bennet is a journalist while Fitzpatrick Darcy is a surgeon. Jane is in her forties and teaches yoga and Mr. Bingley is a doctor and the protagonist of the Bachelor-like show, Eligible. Mary Bennet spends her time earning degrees online while Kitty and Lydia are obsessed with their CrossFit regimes. Mr Collins (or Cousin Willie) is a tech nerd and Charlotte is an overweight manager. Mr. Wickham is a married man with whom Elizabeth has an affair. And, finally, Mr. Bennet is the same sarcastic character that you love in the original novel.
Full of hilarious and captivating moments, this novel is sharp and intriguing and it will make you laugh out loud. There is never a dull moment, sometimes it gets a bit too much, but the author craftily adapted the 1700s to modern times.
What drove me to read this novel is not only my love for Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice, but this author’s writing. I first read Curtis Sittenfeld a few years ago when I read her novel, American Wife, which kept me glued to the page for its captivating writing and insightful plot. Reading Eligible, I found the same engrossing writing describing characters that I love and make me laugh and I couldn’t stop reading.
Even if you don’t like Jane Austen, I recommend you read this book because, trust me, it is not easy to put down.
