First published in 1925, The Secret of Chimneys is a bit of murder mystery, a bit of treasure hunt, and also a bit of romance. The entire novel takes place at Chimney, Lord Caterham’s country house where a party is currently being held. When a murder is discovered, both Scotland Yard and the French Sûreté arrive to investigate.
I really enjoyed this novel. There is much going on: conspiracies, hidden identities, foreign royals, stolen diamonds, blackmailing letters and scandalous memoirs and, trying to solve it all, one of the less-known detectives from Agatha Christie, the formidable Superintend Battle. Full of intrigue and mystery, The Secrets of Chimneys is one of the best of Agatha Christie’s earlier thrillers.
