In the past two years, B. A. Paris has become one of my favorite authors. I first read her second novel, The Breakdown, the story of a woman who thinks she is losing her mind over her guilt in not helping another woman during a stormy night. I was completely addicted to that novel and to the author’s writing so then I read her debut, Behind Closed Doors, which explores the story of a marriage and how we really don’t know what happened behind closed doors (this is me playing with words!). I loved her debut even more, so I was really looking forward to her third novel, Bring Me Back. This is a bit different from the first two novels where the protagonist is a woman, while here the protagonists are two, Finn and an unknown character.

Twelve years before, Finn and his girlfriend Layla were returning from skiing when Layla suddenly disappeared. She was never found and now Finn leaves in a small town outside of London with his fiancée Ellen, who happens to be also Layla’s older sister. Their lives are pretty normal (and dull) until Russian dolls starts to appear and Finn receives emails from someone who claims to know what really happened to Layla. Is Layla still alive? If so, where has she been for the past twelve years? And where is she now?

The novel is dark, haunting, and twisty. It’s unpredictable and, I have to admit, even improbable, but I still loved it and I couldn’t put it down. The author explores in detail the psychology of the characters, analyzing their feelings, guilt, and fears, making the novel more compelling and thought-provoking.

A gripping tale of secrets and a past that always catch up with you, I am already looking forward to book number 4!
