Zoe Walker has a pretty normal and ordinary life. She has a boring job, she has two grown children who still live at home, and she is more and more in love with her partner Simon. She lives at the outskirts of London and every day she takes the train in and out of the city. It is during one of her commutes that she notices her picture on the classifieds of a newspaper with a phone number and a website that leads nowhere. How did her picture end up on the newspaper? And why everyone is not taking it seriously as she is?
The next day her picture is gone, replaced with a different woman, but with the same phone number and website. Every day there is a picture of a different woman and some of them are robbed, assaulted, or killed. Zoe starts feeling as if someone is watching her while Kelly, a hard-working police officer, tries to figure out who is behind these pictures and these attacks.
This is Clare Mackintosh’s second novel (you can read my review of her first novel, I Let You Go, here) and I have to say I love this author more and more. Her female characters are stronger and more determined than they seem and her plots are twisting and disturbing (I am now kind of scared to take the tube, she says half-jokingly). If you are looking for a really chilly thriller to read during these summer days, then this should definitely be on your list.
