Three women. Kate is a journalist looking for a good scoop that will keep her job safe. Angela has been looking for her daughter Alice for more than thirty years, since she had been kidnapped from her crib at the hospital right after her birth.
Emma lives a quiet life with her husband, but her troubled past doesn’t give her any rest. These three women have never met before but the discovery of the body of a baby on a construction site brings them together. Kate thinks that the story is bigger than it seems and starts to investigate the discovery of the child. Angela hopes and, at the same time, fears that the body is of her daughter Alice. Emma is scared that this discovery will bring to light the truth about her past and the reason behind the long estrangement with her self-absorbed mother. As these three women come together to investigate, a bigger truth comes to light.
It took me a while to get into this novel. At the beginning, the story was slow-paced I wasn’t engrossed in it and I couldn’t really connect to any of the characters. Then, about one hundred pages in, things changed. The story becomes more fast-paced and engaging and the characters are more developed and they lead the suspenseful narration.
I love how the author narrates the story from the characters’ points of view giving the reader an insight inside their minds, their fears, and their hopes. There are few twists throughout the novel, but the final one was completely shocking.
An addictive and compelling novel with engaging characters and an intriguing plot. The perfect novel for fans of Ruth Ware and Paula Hawkins.
