Pubblicato in Italia con il titolo L’imprevedibile destino di Emily Fox-Seton. La storia di una donna senza prospettive la cui vita cambia dopo l’incontro con un marchese.

The protagonist is thirty-something Emily Fox-Seton who lives in a boarding house with no job prospects and she gains a small income by helping rich aristocratic women organize parties and run errands. Emily is humble and a bit naive and she is always happy to help others, who often take advantage of her goodness. Emily worries about the future, wondering what her next job will be and where she is going to live, but her fortune changes after meeting Lord Walderhurst.

Frances Hodgson Burnett is best known for her children novels, especially The Secret Garden, which is one of my favourite books, but this is her adult novel and it is a great page-turner, with a fantastic and well-developed protagonist. It was first published in 1901 in two parts, The Making of a Marchioness and The Methods of Lady Walderhurst. Now, it’s been brought together in a collected version republished by Persephone Books in 2007. Highly recommended!
