All Sara Linton wants is for Will to find his wife Angie and get a divorce. But Angie is elusive and, it seems, impossible to find. Even when she is away, she is a shadow in their relationship. Sara is on her first job as a medical examiner for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and she is together with Will, his partner Faith, and his boss Amanda (who is my favourite character, by the way) on the scene of a murder, an ex-cop has been found dead inside the nightclub of a famous basketball player. The most shocking surprise is the gun found next to him as it belongs to the-very-hard-to-find Angie. As Will search for his wife, Sara starts to question their relationship.
Thanks to Karin Slaughter’s attention to details we get an insight into Will and Angie’s very complicated and dysfunctional relationship. Angie is a very complicated and multi-layered character (and I really don’t like her), and Will’s worry, fear, and distress are almost palpable as I read through the pages. The tension is always high as the GBI is investigating high-profile characters who have important lawyers on speed-dial. As always, some of the themes of the book are hard to read, but Karin Slaughter is an author that I am never able to put down, even when the stories are gruesome.
Gripping, addictive, and thought-provoking, this is the eight book in the Will Trent series.
