The book starts with a school party. Parents are all dressed up and having fun until someone dies. It is not clear if it is murder or accident but the police is there to investigate and interrogate all the people attending. Between testimonies and interrogatories, the author takes the reader back a few months, on the first day of school, when everything started. There are three women at the center of the story.
Confident Madeline, mother of two, wife, and with an ex-husband who parades his new family every day at same school where her daughter goes. She is a force of nature you can’t help but like. Beautiful Celeste, mother of twin boys whose perfect marriage isn’t so perfect. And young Jane is new in town and a single mother who seems to be hiding something. Between relationships, problems at school, and various issues, these three women form a strong friendship.
This novel is a real page-turner. At the center of the novel there are three formidable women with their compelling stories and secrets. The novel is beautifully written and it is both funny and dramatic. As the story moves on, the suspense raises and I was completely surprised by the final twist.
After you finish reading this book, don’t miss the TV series starring Reese Whiterspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Adam Scott. I don’t often like the movie adaptations of books, but I loved this series as much as I loved the book.
