A couple of years ago, I read Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (before it was turned into the acclaimed TV series with Reese Whiterspoon and Nicole Kidman and which I highly suggest you watch, even if you haven’t read the book) and I was completely hooked from the first page. So, when earlier this year I found that she had a new novel coming out, I couldn’t wait to read it and when I finally got my hands on a copy I read it in two days, even though it’s more than 400 pages long.

Tranquillum House is a health resort in the middle of nowhere, a place where people go to improve their health and their minds. The nine protagonists of story don’t know each other, but they all booked a ten-day stay at the resort. There is a grieving family trying to forget their guilt, there is a married couple who hopes to save their marriage, a mother-of-four who wants to lose weight, a health junkie lawyer, a renowned author trying to forget her problems both in her personal and professional life, and a man trying to get his life back on track. And then there is Masha, the owner of the resort. She has created a revolutionary program that will help these people to get their lives back together. But between forced silences and fasting, it seems that something is not completely right at Tranquillum House.

Liane Moriarty really knows how to keep the readers on edge. Even though you know what is going on you never know what to expect and there are many surprises and twists that will keep you glued to the page. The characters are very well-developed, each with their hopes, fears, and secrets. They are relatable and likable, some more than others.

A novel about love, friendship, addiction, loss, and family, it will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It’s engaging and captivating and I am already looking forward to whatever novel Liane Moriarty is writing next.
