Pamela Paul is the editor of The New York Times Book Review and she manages the book reviews for the Times. She’s been an avid reader since a young age, but when she was in high school, in a student trip in France she started the Book of Books, a diary where she started recording all the books she reads.
Since then, she has been keeping a detailed record of her reading list and in this book she narrates how reading had an impact on her life, how she would always take a book with her, from her frequent trips to France, to her year in South East Asia, from house to house, from job to job. She also narrates how her boyfriends couldn’t understand it and or how they would try to be part of it.
She talks about the books that were important in her life, that reminded her of a crucial moment in her life, from her divorce to the books she would read to her children.
My Life With BoB is mostly an exploration of a woman’s life among books, but she also narrates personal facts of her life, often related to a book that she was reading at that moment. The episode I liked most was when, after giving birth to her third child, she spent all her time in the hospital reading The Hunger Game series, sometimes not even noticing if her child was feeding properly.
I decided to read this book because I am an avid reader of The New York Times book reviews (my favorite is the “By the Book” section in which, every week, an author talks about the books they are reading) and I wanted to know more about the woman behind it. It’s a very insightful and absorbing read. It’s very well-written and it captivates the reader’s attention. Because of it, my to-read list just got longer, but this is the perfect read for any bookworm out there.
