Pubblicato in Italia con il titolo L’eredità di Mrs Westaway. Un’eredità inaspettata, una famiglia piena di segreti, una ragazza disperata. Tutto questo è nel nuovo coinvolgente romanzo di Ruth Ware.

You’re drowning in debts, a loan shark is after you, and your future is gloomy and dark. So what would you do if a lawyer announced you that you are an heir to a large fortune? Would you accept it, even though you know that there’s probably been a mistake? That’s what happens to Harriet “Hal” Westaway, the protagonist of the new novel by one of my favourite authors, Ruth Ware.

Hal makes a living reading tarot cards on a pier in Brighton. She owes lots of money and, since her mother died three years earlier, she has no family left. So when she receives a letter from a lawyer informing her that her wealthy grandmother has left her an inheritance, Hal thinks there’s been a mistake. But the need for money lead her to board a train to Cornwall and claim her inheritance. Once there, Hal finds herself in a house and family full of secrets and lies, that will bring to light a past much more horrible than she could ever think.

I love this author and her novels, and The Death of Mrs Westaway has quickly became my favourite novel from her. I liked the protagonist. She may try to get an inheritance that doesn’t belong to her, but she is desperate and she is a good person. The gothic mansion of the Westaway family, complete of creepy housekeeper, give the story an eerie and dark atmosphere that will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. This is an unsettling, twisty, and captivating novel that I highly recommend!
