The protagonist of the story is Marie. On the outside, she is a loyal and trustworthy friend. In fact, when her best friend Nina passes away, she doesn’t think twice about her promise to look after her family and she leaves her boyfriend behind and moves in with Nina’s husband and two children. As Marie becomes more and more part of the family, she finds out secrets about Nina’s past that make her doubt whether she knew her best friend at all.

What a twisty and addictive story. There are so many secrets and so many question. Who to trust? Not the characters because each one of them is hiding something and I can’t say I really liked any of them, especially Marie, although, by the end, I could understand her a little bit better.

Karen Hamilton’s debut novel, The Perfect Girlfriend, has been a success and I don’t doubt that The Last Wife will follow on its footsteps. This is an author to watch out!
