Taal Volcano is a complex volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It is the second most active volcano in the Philippines with 33 historical eruptions. All of these eruptions are concentrated on Volcano Island, an island near the middle of Taal Lake. Viewed from the Tagaytay Ridge in Cavite, Taal Volcano and Lake presents one of the most picturesque and attractive views in the Philippines. It is located about 50 kilometres south of the capital of the country, the city of Manila.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a phreatic eruption in Taal Volcano last Sunday, 12th of January 2020. And at around 11:00 am due to hydro-thermal activities after 3 hours a stronger explosion was recorded around 2pm. The volcanic spewed a kilometer tall of ash column and Taal Volcano Main Crater has escalated its eruptive activity, generating an eruption plume 1 kilometer-high accompanied by volcanic tremor and felt earthquakes in Volcano Island and near barangays. PHIVOLCS strongly recommends be evacuated due to the possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami. Almost half a million residents nearby and around the volcano was evacuated by the Batangas provincial disaster management.
The ashfall reaches Metro Manila, they canceled flights in Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the afternoon and they also suspended airport operations due to Taal Volcano’s eruption. The public is reminded that the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). In addition, communities around the Taal Lake shore are advised to take precautionary measures and be vigilant of possible lakewater disturbances related to the ongoing unrest. The alert status of taal volcano remains at level 4 on a scale of 0-5.
