While Georgette Heyer is mostly famous for her historical romance novels, she was also a prolific author of mystery novels. The first I’ve read is Footsteps in the Dark and it was quite entertaining.
The protagonists of the novel are three siblings who, following the death of their uncle, inherit the Priory, a crumbling old house that the locals believe to be haunted. Initially, the lack of electricity and facilities is the major problem for the three siblings, Margaret, Celia, and Peter, who are staying at the house together with Celia’s husband, Charles, their elderly aunt, and their faithful servants. But when they start hearing strange noises and then the entity known as the Monk makes an appearance, they start to think that there is more to the local stories, especially as many people seem to be interested in their house.
Footsteps in the Dark was a fun and intriguing read. Full of the author’s usual wit and wonderful characters, there is mystery, romance, ghosts, secret panels and tunnels, and skeletons hidden in the closet. The more of her books I read, the more I want!
