Pubblicato in Italia con il titolo Il Giorno Che Aspettiamo. La bellissima storia d’amore tra Lucy e Gabe nel corso di quindici anni durante i quali i due sono separati e riuniti dalle circostanze.
Lucy and Gabe are both students at Columbia University and they meet on 9/11 as from their campus they see the smoke coming from downtown Manhattan. They fall for each other right away but circumstances keep them away. Months later they meet again and now there is nothing to keep them apart. Or so it seems. Because Gabe is restless and, as a photographer, wants to be where the action is. So when he gets the chance, he leaves behind an heartbroken Lucy and goes to cover the war in Iraq.

Slowly, Lucy finds love again with Darren and goes on with her life but Gabe never completely goes away and over the years the two meet again and again. But Lucy is building a family with Darren and Gabe is travelling around the globe capturing the atrocities of the world on his camera. Will their love survive?
First of all, before you start reading this book, you will need lots of tissues ready because this is a very emotional novel. The love story between Lucy and Gabe is beautiful and sad at the same time and you will shed many tears.

The characters are well-built and likable. Lucy’s struggle as she has to choose between Gabe and Darren is well-developed and realistic and I loved how the author goes into details about her feelings and her mind.

The ending really surprised me and I loved it and hated it at the same time (I am not going to give away any spoilers on the why!).

The Light We Lost is on the top of my favorite books of this year. Romantic, heart-breaking, completely absorbing and memorable, it is perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes and David Nicholls.
